Kyoto, Japan, 2011 - Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Temple, is one of Japan’s most popular tourist attractions. The Zen Buddhist Temple, originally a villa called Kitayama-dai, has been reincarnated several times throughout its life. Acquired by shōgun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the original building was transformed into the temple, which inspired what we see today. The original structure is said to date back to the Heian period (794 - 1185), was burned down in 1950 and has undergone various rebuilds and reconditioning. Saṃsāra is a Sanskrit word that means "wandering" or "world", with the connotation of cyclic, circuitous change. It is also the concept of rebirth and "cyclicality of all life, matter, existence", a fundamental belief of Buddhism. Reflection refers to the gold leaf coating the temple, the nature of Buddhism to promote mindfulness, and the camouflaged herron sitting on the rock in the foreground, which appears to be pondering the meaning of life. Or perhaps, looking for a fish through his own reflection.
