Christianity was deeply embedded in philosophical conversations of its time, ranging from Jonathan Edwards on the philosophical nature of personhood and the will, through a recapitulation of similar issues in the mid-19th century. The latter here engaged [including Edwards] by Henry Tappan, Chancellor of the University of Michigan. He was known as the "John the Baptist" of American Education and also pastored in the Dutch Reformed Church.
