We don't recall ever seeing this unusual early sepia print before; executed probably in the 1860's in sepia tone it depicts Whitefield's expulsion from St. Mary's at Islington where the Methodist sympathizer, George Stonehouse was minister. Charles Wesley had been his associate and John was a regular there.

It was no accident the Churchwarden was ready and waiting with his demand. The incident was the natural result of Stonehouse's giving quarter to and sharing his pulpit with ministers not ordained in the Anglican church.

It is sepia print [16 x 24] adhered to a larger mount [18 x 26] with the print description:

The Rev. George Whitefield then in his 25th year had just returned to London and was asked by his friend the Vicar of Islington to officiate for him in the Parish Church on the morning of Friday, April 27th, 1739. During the prayers the Churchwarden came & demanded him to produce his license or he forbad him to preach in that pulpit. "For peace sake," says Whitefield, "I declined preaching in the Church & when the Communion Prayers were over preached in the churchyard. The above incident forms the subject of the picture. Tottenham Court Road Chapel was built & opened by George Whitefield in 1756."

Good condition only; some stains, foxing, and light losses. Very rare, worth preserving, and certainly either usable as is or a good candidate for conservation.
