Fascinating work by the Great Awakening divine, Thomas Scott [1747-1821]. He is of course author of the famed commentary and his influential The Force of Truth. Here, he enters into the antinomian controversy, arguing that the Gospel of grace, rather than being the enemy of holiness and obedience actually best leads to a life of holiness and obedience because empowered by the reception of grace rather than human effort.

Scott's personal influence is often forgotten. He succeeded John Newton at Olney where he continued to support and sustain William Wilberforce's anti-slavery efforts spiritually. And he also took in a young Baptist intern, William Carey. He helped form the Church Missionary Society and more.

Scott, Thomas. The Doctrines of Election, and Final Perseverance stated from Scripture, and shewn consistent with exhortatory and practical Preaching, and conducive to holiness of Life. A Sermon Preached at the Lock-Chapel, November 26th, 1786. Second Edition with Additions. London. C. Watts. 1787. 49pp.

Textually a good, clean copy. Removed from an earlier sammelband at some point with associated tenderness and flotsam to spine.
