Auf ein „Dazwischen“, das Eindeutigkeit ebenso einschließt wie Unbestimmtheit, muss man sich einlassen, wenn man sich mit der Malerei von Natascha Schmitten befassen möchte. Weder der Bildraum noch das Bildsujet sind auf den ersten Blick direkt zu erfassen. Selbst dem ambulanten Blick, dem sich immerzu in Bewegung befindlichen Blick, erschließt sich nur langsam und doch niemals ganz die Materialität der Bilder und ihre strukturelle Vielschichtigkeit. Denn in der wechselseitigen Durchdringung von Thema und Technik entstehen komplexe Kompositionen, intensive Farbwelten und lichtdurchflutete Bildräume.

Schmitten nutzt Licht als wesentlichen Aspekt ihrer Malerei, denkt es im Prozess des Malens mit, wenn sie mit chirurgischer Präzision einzelne Lichtmomente setzt oder durch exakt gesetzte Aussparungen das Eindringen des natürlichen Lichts evoziert. So scheint im Bild selbst eine permanente Veränderung angelegt zu sein, die durch den bewegten Blick und die sich wandelnde Lichteinwirkung verstärkt wird. Bis zur maximalen Farbbrillanz lotet die Künstlerin die Intensität, Reinheit und Helligkeit von Farben aus, die mit dem halbtransparenten Polyestergewebe, mit dem sie ihre Rahmen bespannt, zu ‚lichttragenden’ Gemälden verschmelzen.

To engage with Natascha Schmitten’s painting, you need to become involved with an “in-between” that includes unambiguity as much as it does indeterminacy. Neither the pictorial space nor the pictorial subject can be directly grasped at first glance. Even the ambulatory gaze, one that is continually moving, can only slowly but never fully reveal the materiality of the images and their structural complexity. For in the mutual interpenetration of theme and technique, complex compositions, intense worlds of color, and light-flooded pictorial spaces are created.

Schmitten uses light as an essential aspect of her work, thinking along with it in the process of painting as she sets individual moments of light with surgical accuracy or evokes the penetration of natural light through precisely placed recesses. A permanent transformation thus seems to be created in the image itself, intensified by the moving gaze and the changing light effects. The artist explores the intensity, purity, and brightness of colors to the maximum brilliance of color itself, merging with the semitransparent polyester fabric with which she covers her frames to create “light-bearing” paintings. In this context the surface structure develops its own unique appeal. In some places it appears as if the color had only touched the nylon by chance, while in others the color is as intense as if it had passed through every single fiber. Matte and velvety areas contrast with transparent and glossy layers, at whose transitions color streaks and gradients are formed. Thus, alongside the visual, there is a desire for haptic perception.
