This set is bound in six drool-inducing full calf bindings. Expert early 19th century calf with centralized to-scale cartouche designs in each spine compartment, brilliantly highlighted by some of the loveliest morocco volume labels we have ever seen. Each central green onlay with volume number is mounted inside a salmon morocco onlay that is tooled with a design reminiscent of the "glory of God" design in reformation era woodcuts. 

They are freshly consolidated with some expert repairs and now ready for use. Some rubbing and minor losses. Hinge tender on two volumes.

The author, Gilbert Burnet [1643-1715] was an important voice against the encroachment of Catholicism into England in the late 17th century. A continental work by Sanders was being distributed in England charging that the Reformation had been nothing more than a power grab by the Crown. Burnet was charged with correcting the story by telling the story of God's grace through the Reformation period in England. It was hailed as a triumph, but when James II [a Catholic] became King in 1685, he was forced to flee the country. His work, however remained, and helped quell the desire of the Papacy to use James II's influence to move England toward Rome.
