Kirk, Edward Norris. Discourses, Doctrinal and Practical. Boston. S. K. Whipple. 1857. First Edition. 225pp.
Very good cloth copy of an important work by one of the persons linking the second great awakening, prayer revivals of the mid-19th century, and the revivals under D. L. Moody. A bit faded, some foxing, but good. No other copies available. Rare in the trade.
Dr. Edward Norris Kirk (1802-1874), educated at Princeton Seminary under Archibald Alexander, pastor of Presbyterian & Congregational churches, active in revivals with both Charles G. Finney and those of the more conservative Presbyterian school [Nettleton, etc.]. He also established a training school for evangelists with Dr. Nathan S. S. Beman of Troy, NY. He served for some thirty years as pastor of the Mount Vernon Congregational Church, and it was under his preaching that the evangelist Dwight L. Moody was converted.
Fascinating work produced right at the outbreak of the 1857 prayer revival; his chapter on prayer seems "of the moment."
