Here is a gem indeed. This folio volume of manuscript hymns, all unpublished were born out of the early Primitive Methodist movement in England and in the United States. The revivalist movement sought to restore the original deeply experimental aspects of the Great Awakening under John Wesley, George Whitefield, etc., and was articulated most dramatically by the camp-meeting preacher, Lorenzo Dow.

The present hymns, the work of Daniel Weston and Elizabeth Weston, both noted as preachers in the Philadelphia Circuit in 1840, date from the 1820's through to the 1840's and contain geographical references to Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Slaugh [UK], and Tansley [UK], etc.,

30 pages in total, the vast majority very legible and apparently complete in terms of the individual hymns and poems. Probably all but two or three are initialed by Daniel Weston, one is initialed by both E & D Weston [husband and wife, both Primitive Methodist Preachers], and one is noted as Cecilia.

A wonderful piece of unpublished, unresearched Primitive Methodist history.

Extract 1 [8 stanzas]

Peaceful moments spent with Jesus,
Free from tumult, noise, and show;
Gaudy toys - the worldling pleases-
We are dead to all below,
Since we found him - who shall endless life bestow.

Extract 2 [15 stanzas]

Encourag'd still to labour on
Till the brief hours of time shall cease
Nor loiter till our work is done
And we behold the Prince of Peace

The very thought of endless rest
Makes all our pain and labour light
But when of Parodice [sic] possess'd
What joy! What infinite delight!!

No finite mind can e'er conceive
What boundless ages must unfold!
That which His love'd ones shall receive
Thehalf has never yet been told.

Extract 3 [12 stanzas]

Will not some regard the warning
And for refuge quickly fly
Or will all delight in scorning
And Almighty power defy
This the question, - will you love - or hopeless die?

Sin His righteous wrath provoked
As his judgments will unfold
Death, - that cannot be revoked!
Loss of glory's yet untold
Nameless folly, - wors [sic] than naught - for mines of gold!

Extract 4 [An Acrostic]

Prayer is our refuge when the beating storm
Replete with maddening rage of foes combined
A calm retreat - a hiding place from harm
Yielding sweet solace - and firm peace of mind
Expanded views of God - attend on prayer
Reveal'd in goodness - mercy - truth and love.

The hallow'd cross - we meely chuse [sic] to bear
Holding sweet converse with the courts above
Encompass'd by the rays of Heavenly light.

Convey'd through channels - open'd up y prayer
How swee the task, - while Heavenly prospects bright
Renews our title to a mansion there.
If in affliction's furnace call'd to share
Soem trifling portion of our Saviour's pain
The fiery test (when sanctify'd by prayer)
Includes the promice [sic] - with Himself to reign
As strangers to a world of pomp and show
No gilded toys - our steadfast hearts betray

Redeeming Love, - is all we wish to know
Endear'd and sweeten'd as we live to prayer.
Fresh from the fountain of Salvation's well
Up-drawn by prayer - is all suficient [sic] grace
Go then in faith, - your empty pitcher fill
Endless the source, - and every where the place. [1838]
