A fine Spring day on Tasmania's wild Tarkine coast is a rare gift. A pre dawn journey down the Pieman River on the MV Arcadia followed by a short hike north along the coast brought us to Rupert Point, a piece of "The Bones" of Tasmania laid bare by countless storms delivered by the Roaring 40's. The shape of this set of lichen painted rocks, amongst many, seemed to be reaching for their freedom, their shape sculptured by a balance between weathering and hardiness. Their tenacity provided some small protection for the valiant efforts of tough ground covering herbage to continue their line. Bounded to the north by the Arthur River and to the south by the Pieman River, the Tarkine Wilderness on the west coast of Tasmania is the largest undisturbed tract of rare cool temperate rainforest in Australia and the second largest in the world.
