A rare survivor, being a pocket-sized hymnal issued in the throes of the rapidly spreading prayer revivals of 1857 and 1858. Begun at Fulton Street in New York, within the year there were similar movements in Boston, Philadelphia, and elsewhere. This item was produced specifically for such periods of "extended" times of singing in the prayer meetings.
Banvard, Joseph [Comp and Preface Note.]. Revival Gems: A Collection of Soul-Stirring Hymns. Specially Adapted to Revivals. Boston. John P. Jewett. 1858. 194pp.
Banvard [1810-1877] was the Pastor of Harvard Street Baptist Church in Boston. For his connection to the revival, see Music, David W. "The Baptist Influence on Revival Music / The Revival Influence on Baptist Music." Baptist History and Heritage, vol. 45, no. 3.
Good + with some rubbing, very slightly cocked and shaken. Solid, clean, and a very nice example of a scarce item.
