Very scarce two volume set of the complete journals and letters of Henry Martyn [1781-1812]. His biography and portions of his diary, edited by John Sargeant, were a staple of Christian devotion and tales of missionary heroism from his death in 1812 through to the early 20th century. However, his primary resource publication, as here, was never reprinted, largely because of its size and the popularity of Sargeant's work.
Martyn was missionary to both India and Persia [modern Iran], and an indefatigable laborer as a Bible translator and evangelist to both Muslim and Hindu communities.
Wilberforce, Samuel [ed.]. Journals and Letters of The Rev. Henry Martyn, B.D. Late Fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge; and Chaplain to the Honourable East India Company. In Two Volumes. London. R. B. Seeley and W. Burnside. 1837. First Edition. 527 + 407pp.
Letters include content involving the missionaries at Serampore as well, Joshua Marshman, William Carey, etc.
Good, solid and crisp in rathe recent buckram; skillfully done with original frontis relaid. Cloth very good with some light dustiness from other volumes; comes off. Some wear and handling to text, minor stains here and there. Gratefully, the effort was invested to save this rare early missionary work.
