A very clean, crisp copy of a classic on non-violence and the interior life by Howard Thurman ]1899-1981].
During his tenure as dean of Marsh Chapel at Boston University, theologian and minister Howard Thurman sent his friendMartin Luther King, Jr., and Coretta Scott King his 1955 volume on spirituals, Deep River. He inscribed the book: “To the Kings—The test of life is often found in the amount of pain we can absorb without spoiling our joy." Thurman’s commitment to a spiritually and physically integrated society, and to the methods of nonviolence, served as major influences in King’s life and were central to the ethic of change resident in the MLK wing of the Civil Rights movement.
All of his works are desirable, and this a rather exceptional copy.
Thurman, Howard. Disciplines of the Spirit. New York. Harper & Roe Publishers. 1963. 127pp.
A vert good copy, bound in cloth with very minor wear to the dustjacket. Very solid. Pages are generally bright, with minor ink marks isolated to a few sections, and 2 single, neat ex library stamps on the ffep and the rfep.
