Cosopt® Eye Drops is a sterile ophthalmic solution manufactured by Santen Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., combining two active ingredients—Dorzolamide hydrochloride and Timolol maleate—to effectively lower intraocular pressure. Though originally developed for human use, Cosopt is sometimes prescribed off-label by veterinarians for dogs with glaucoma, particularly when monotherapy is insufficient. Its dual mechanism targets both aqueous humor production and outflow resistance, making it a valuable option in managing ocular hypertension.

Ingredients

• Active Ingredients (per mL):
  • Dorzolamide hydrochloride – 20 mg (equivalent to 2%)
  • Timolol maleate – 5 mg (equivalent to 0.5%)
• Inactive Ingredients:
  • Hydroxyethyl cellulose
  • Mannitol
  • Sodium citrate
  • Sodium hydroxide/hydrochloric acid (pH adjustment)
  • Water for injection
  • Benzalkonium chloride (preservative, unless using PF version)

Uses / Indications

Cosopt® is indicated for:

• Reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with:
• Open-angle glaucoma
• Ocular hypertension
• In veterinary medicine, used off-label for:
• Primary or secondary glaucoma in dogs
• Adjunct therapy when monotherapy is inadequate

Dosage

• Typical dosage: 1 drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily
• Administer at consistent intervals (e.g. every 12 hours)
• Shake well before use
• Avoid contact between dropper tip and eye surface
• Duration: As prescribed by a veterinarian

Possible Side Effects

• Local reactions: burning, stinging, blurred vision, eye redness
• Systemic effects (due to Timolol): bradycardia, fatigue, bronchospasm
• Allergic reactions: itching, swelling, rash
• Rare: Corneal edema, conjunctivitis, or dry eyes

Drug & Food Interactions

• Use with caution in animals receiving:
• Systemic beta-blockers
• Calcium channel blockers
• Digitalis glycosides
• Other topical glaucoma medications
• No known food interactions

Precautions

• For external ophthalmic use only
• Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to sulfonamides or beta-blockers
• Use with caution in animals with:
• Cardiac disease (e.g. AV block, bradycardia)
• Respiratory conditions (e.g. asthma, COPD)
• Store at room temperature (15–25°C)
• Discard 28 days after opening
