Very sharp, early imprint of George Peck's [1797-1876] classic holiness work. Peck was a prominent Methodist throughout over 6 decades of ministry. He helped found Cazenovia Seminary, Wyoming [PA] Seminary, was editor of the Christian Advocate, etc., but found his real sweet spot in the burgeoning holiness and camp-meeting movements. His work on Christian Perfection [here] helped lay the groundwork for the movement.

Of course, Peck's grandson was the influential American author, Stephen Crane of The Red Badge of Courage fame, though we prefer Crane's poetry.

While note an advocate of the doctrine ourselves, we've always appreciated the view of Peck that something more abundant is available in the Christian Life. One of the highlights of the book is the way Peck has tramped through a vast swath of Church history for accounts from a variety of theological persuasions which bolster the claim that a "higher life" is available via regeneration and the empowering work of the Spirit. The extracts [called out in the index] include Herman Witsius, The Westminster Assembly Divines, Francis Turretin, Moses Stuart, William Romaine, The Reformers, Melancthon, Charles Finney, the Anabaptists, etc.,

A small section on the miraculous gifts as well.

Peck, George. The Scripture Doctrine of Christian Perfection Stated and Defended: With Practical Illustrations and Advices. In a Series of Lectures. [Abridged]. New York. Lane and Tippett for the Methodist Episcopal Church. James Collord, Printer. 1845. 323pp.

Good + to very good. A tidy, full calf copy with some minor rubbing, through at extremities, small breach on rear hinge [not impacting stability]. Moderately foxed at prelims and some minor to text. Crisp and clean.
