A wonderfully preserved 1870 3pp ALS by Christian mystic, fairy tale author, and inspiration to C. S. Lewis specifically [and the Inklings in general]. Unusually, the present letter is not only exceptionally crisp, it retains the original monogramed envelope of George MacDonald.
An exceptionally large, clear autograph and a peek into the pace of work MacDonald maintained . . . the pain, the plod, the grueling "work" it took to leave to those of us who love his work, such a legacy of life, delight, and devotion.
"The Retreat
Hammersmith, W.
Oc. 7, 1870.
My Dear Sir [Rev. J. R. Mitchell],
I am ashamed to find how long I have delayed answering your note. The fact is I am oppressed with work at present, so much so that I am undertaking no engagements. I should have much liked to meet you, and, if I am happy enough to get through with my work on hand - or even so far to overcome it as to feel at ease concerning its completion, I shall be glad to hear of you again, that you still desire to see me.
I shall be at Hastings all the winter - my address there - 2, Montpelier, Old London Road.
With best wishes,
Yours very truly
George Macdonald
Rev. J. R. Mitchell"
