A superb Puritan exposition of the Shorter Catechism for the use of ministers and in the home. Mayer's work was the most popular catechistical guide during the time of the Great Migration, including a copy owned by Myles Standish!

An excellent dealing with the whole range of spiritual need, including then current theological controversies all the way to cases of conscience, dealing with doubt, etc,. His catechism was the puritan articulation of the Common Prayer in the day, but is now rarely seen for sale.

Spurgeon called Mayer [1583-1664], "Old Master Mayer." It took Spurgeon many years to complete his set of the works of Mayer. Even 250 years after its authorship, Spurgeon still declared Mayer's commentaries as "one of the fullest and best of learned English commentaries . . ." and expressed fears "that he will be forgotten." 

Rare on the market. No copies at auction since 1981 and no copies available for direct sale at the time of cataloguing. It went through many editions quite early on, but they were used daily in homes, etc., and thus were uncommon survivors.
