A rather rare author inscribed volume, presumably to one of the "orphans," by Jewish educator and reformer, Dr. Hermann Baar, Superintendent of the Hebrew Orphan Asylum of New York.

Founded in 1860, the home cared for over 13,000 children between that year and 1920. Baar became Superintendnet in 1876 and led the school during its most flourishing period. 

We trace no other signed examples.

"Presented to Harry Woolf by Dr. Herman Baar, Dec. 29, 1888. Might I give counsel to any young man, I would say to him, try to frequent the company of your betters. In books, and in life, that is the most wholesome society; learn to admire rightly; The great pleasure of life is that. Note that great men admired. They admired great things; narrow spirits admire basely and worship meanly."

Good - copy in attractive cloth, nicked at head of spine and rubbed at corners. Faint stain to rear board and spine faded. Prelims shaken and one of the "contents" pages loose. Remainder of text generally sound and clean.
