Thomas C. Upham [1799-1872] was a fascinating 19th century figure featuring prominently as a serious philosopher and theologian, a pacifist, and as a leading figure in the Methodist-Holiness movement. The present work features prominently in the theological and holiness discussion as it involves the role of the "self" and "agency" in relationship to the ability to choose the moral good. This was no mere philosophical trile for Upham, but critical to helping define the actual potential of Christian sanctification. 

He interacts with Locke, Jonathan Edwards, and many others, while making contributions uniquely his own.

He was noted as having "the most analytic mind in psychology of his day".
