The "protectionist" strain is evident from the beginning to the end of its sprawling 367pp. We have chapters and sections like, "Cultivation of American Feeling and Sentiment," "Policy of Americans for America," The American Policy of Non-Intervention," "Crime," "Intemperance," "Juvenile Vagrancy," "Criminal Immigration," etc., 

Absolutely fascinating. Change a few words, update the data, and it feels like it could have been written very recently indeed.
