One of the more ambitious publications of the American Sunday School Union in terms of size, containing 344pp and embellished with their usual full-page engravings. Their usual volumes were far more slender.

A fine work providing young American readers a set of aspirational virtues, including a special section on female virtues [female covenanter martyrs, elizabeth fry, etc.]; on alleviating the suffering of others; of working against ignorance and poverty; in self-conquest; under affliction and adversity; as missionaries; in defence of civil liberties; in enduring disappointment; and in opposing popular violence. 

Persons include Josiah Quincy, William Wilberforce, Thomas Clarkson, Patrick Henry, John Jay, Robert Moffat, Jehudi Ashmun, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, and more. 

We leave in situ an early single sheet tract entitled "Open Doors to Hell!" against the theatre, billiards, tobacco, beer, bowling, cards, and "houses of ill fame," i.e. prostitution. This probably 1920's.

Good - to fair. Actually quite attractive on the shelf with red morocco patinated quite nicely. Boards heavily rubbed and rounded. Contents generally shaken and handled, but complete.
