A rather rare work, appearing only a handful of times at auction in the last 100 years, this is a particularly good copy.
Issued directly on the cusp of the Civil War by the American Tract Society, its content had the specific aim of galvanizing Northern Christian sentiment behind the effort. It begins with the founding fathers and the Constitution, arguing they were/are against slavery, then to the gruesome history of slavery, the effects of slavery on Africa itself [which is supposed to be a mission field for God's grace, not for greedandcruely], on the noble but thus-far unsuccessful efforts to abolish slavery in America, and on the actual increase and revival of slavery in the South. The closing appeal may as well have had a form to enlist in the Union Army.
An historically significant work.
Clark, Rufus W. The African Slave Trade. Boston. American Tract Society. 1860. 102pp.
Good + to very good copy with rubbing just through at extremities and a very faint tide mark to cloth. Interior crisp, bright, and clean.
