The beautiful, slightly asymmetric arch of the old pack horse bridge over the Dulnain River at Carrbridge, Strathspey in the Scottish Highlands speaks of the tenuous but tenacious hold it has upon its existence. I was given to ponder the number of feet and loads that had passed over it. Built in 1717, it was severely damaged in the wild flood, the "muckle spate" of 1829, which swept away a number of other bridges in the region. This broken bridge and the waters of the Dulnain River have kept company for many years, both being "Ancient Passages".
