A very interesting work by recent Irish immigrant, henry O'Reilly. In the present, he argues that the Civil War is about more than slavery itself, but that slavery and the war are both part of a larger struggle between aristocracy, a "special class" of people, and "the rest of us," including slaves, urban and rural white laborers and workers, etc., That slavery is the worst embodiment of what might later be called class struggle. 

That said, O'Reilly saw the best hope for the people in the implementation of the documents of the United States of America. A strongly pro-American, pro-Union work.
