Superb sammelband of late 18th and early 19th century sermons and orations largely centered around American patriotism, the death of President George Washington, etc.,

It appears to have been compiled by Reverend Reuben Nason [b.1779], named after his uncle who died fighting as an officer during the opening days of the American Revolution at Ticonderoga.

Occasioned by the Sudden and Universally Lamented Death of George Washington, Command of the American Armies, and Late President of the United States. Portsmouth, New-Hampshire. Printed at the United States' Oracle Office in January and Re-Printed in February by Charles Peirce. 24pp. [Inscribed by the author to Rev. Reuben Nason, small clip at half title, mourning border on title and mourning memorandum on final leaf; no copies on the market in any state]

Lathrop, Joseph. God's Challenge to Infidels to Defend their Cause, Illustrated and Applied in a Sermon Delivered in West Springfield, May 4, 1797, being the Day of General Fast. Printed at the University Press in Cambridge, by William Hilliard. 1797. 28pp. [Very good early Americana content by one of the elder statesmen of the pulpit]

Emmons, Nathanael. Unity of Sentiment among Christians Necessary to Unity of Affection. A Sermon Preached before the Convention of the Congregational Ministers in Boston, May 31, 1804. Boston. Manning & Loring. 1804. 24pp. 24pp. [Fascinating sermon arguing in some ways against the idea of religious liberty, at least at the level of the ecclesia]

Worcester, Samuel. Righteousness Conducive to Happiness: A Sermon Delivered at Reading, Lord's Day, April 15, 1804. Salem. Joshua Cushing. 1804. [Presented by prominent divine, Peter Sanborn, to Reuben Nason; an important theme in the emerging America; how does a country of liberty not become a country of libertines]

Macclintock, Samuel [Chaplain to the New Hampshire troops during the American Revolution]. Evidences of Christianity. A Sermon Delivered at the Ordination of the Rev. Jesse Appleton, to the Pastoral Care of the Congregational Society in Hampton. February 22d, 1797. Printed at the Oracle-Press in Portsmouth, N.H. by Charles Peirce, 1797. 24pp

Ames, Fisher. An Oration on the Sublime Virtues of General George Washington, Pronounced at the Old South Meeting-House in Boston, before His Honor the Lieutenant-Governor, the Council, and the Two Branches of the Legislature of Massachusetts, at Their Request, on Saturday, the 8th of February, 1800. Boston: Printed for Young & Minns, and Manning & Loring, 1800. 31pp. [Lacking title; textually complete]

Boyd, William. An Oration on the Death of Mr. John Russell, Senior Sophister, at Harvard University. Delivered November 25, in the College Chapel. Boston. John W. Folsom, for the Author. 1795.

Kendall, James. A Sermon Delivered at Dennis, January 2, 1805, at the Ordination of the Rev. Caleb Holmes, to the Pastoral Office in that Place. Boston. Gilbet & Dean. 1805. [Inscribed to Reuben Nason by Caleb Holmes; stained at top half of text]

All in an attractive half leather binding of the period, it apparently was damp at some point with some misshapenness to boards and some occasional stains. Very solid.
