In Tribal Tripartite, Tom Gilleon explores not only the vibrant interplay of color and design but also the mutual dependence among Plains Indian tribes. Historically, tribes on the Great Plains survived by forming alliances, much like other nation-states, sharing a nomadic lifestyle centered around tipis—mobile lodges that facilitated their movement. Villages often hosted members from different tribes, each distinguished by unique cultural expressions in their tipi construction and artwork.

The title Tripartite refers to something composed of three distinct parts. Gilleon chose to feature three different tribal tipi designs and incorporated three separate light sources—casting light from the left, the right, and the sunset behind the lodges. Through this composition, he communicates a vital message: not all tribes were in conflict.
