Very rare 2pp extensive ALS by Henry Drummond. Drummond [1786-1860] experienced a personal awakening to Christ in 1817 under the famous Scottish evangelist and revivalist, Robert Haldane. There he became deeply interested in prophecy and the last days and, with Hugh M'Neile, helped facilitate the Albury Conferences. There Edward Irving's views were largely upheld; a premillennial return of Christ, the restoration of Israel, etc., Many see the birthplace of modern premillennial eschatology in those meetings. Additionally, they concluded that the last days Church would see an outpouring of miraculous healings, prophecies, and the emergence of a new apostolate.

He was a leader of the emerging Irvingite, or Catholic Apostolic Church, and was ultimately appointed Apostle to Scotland and Switzerland as one of the twelve "Angels" of the Church.

Because of his legal work as a prominent banker and MP, autographs are not scarce. However, any theologically oriented material is very rare and desirable.

This letter, dated London, 9 May, 1851, is addressed to Members of the Stockport Protestant Association. In its lengthy two pages, some 300-400 words, regarding his view of Ecclesiology, especially the Ecclesiastical Titles Bill, on their agreed view that the Papacy is again trying to exert and extend its power and presence in England, the lately released Pius IX communication to Catholics in Switzerland [where he was Apostle] regarding the tendency of Protestantism to crush souls under the guise of liberty, etc. He proceeds to discuss the role of the Jesuits, the papacy in Austria, etc., and notes that some are "slaves of the Roman Priesthood within the Queen's dominion."

Very intense letter.

A bit toned, light chipping. Complete and legible.
