An Autumn storm clears over Rob Roy Glacier in the Mt Aspiring National Park in New Zealand's South Island. The rain and snow melt cascades down the rock faces of the cirque and into Rob Roy Stream, light blue and aerated as it rushes past tumbled rocks. Once a contiguous part of the Matukituki and Wanaka Glaciers which carved the valleys and lake basin of the Wanaka region, the Rob Roy Glacier has receded to the top of the cliff at the head of the valley just below Rob Roy Peak. Early European farmers in the Matukituki Valley named the peak and the glacier after the Scottish Jacobite folk hero Rob Roy McGregor. Reminded of the hard and unforgiving life of Rob Roy and many Jacobite supporters like him, this stream could well carry "The Tears of the Jacobite".
