A very attractively preserved and boldly signed autobiography of the evangelist who "never lost the wonder of it all," Gipsy Smith.

Smith was of course converted to Christ by a prison chaplain while his father was incarcerated, but quickly came under the influence of William Booth. Booth recognized his calling and Smith began to serve as an Evangelist with the Salvation Army. After six years of successful ministry, he was relieved of duty. In 1882, the congregation had the gift of a gold watch made for his wife out of spontaneous affection. Gipsy felt it ungracious not to accept and so did. When Booth found out, since it was strictly against Salvation Army practice, Smith was given the boot and set out on his own.

Probably the nicest presentation copy we have ever handled, and preserved in a beautiful quarter leather folding book box custom made probably mid-century for Robert L. Henderson's collection.

Smith, Gipsy. An Autobiography. With a Forward by Alexander Maclaren. Fleming H. Revell. 1918.

Very good. Leather with only the slightest rubbing, linen a bit faded. The copy itself as shown, some fading and loss of lettering, but clean, solid, and a beautiful autograph.
