I have handled a few early Staffordshire busts of Wesley over the years. This might be my favorite. Each example was individually painted, the style and quality of the finishing varying dramatically. This example, painted to look ancient, as though gesso had broken away revealing wood underneath, or perhaps a marble bust beautifully aged by time, is truly unique. I don't recall seeing one like it before and it fits the antiquarian library perfectly.
Staffordshire, after Enoch Wood inscribed on verso medallion, "The Revd. John Wesley M.A., died Mar 2, 1791, aged 88. Enoch Wood Sculp, Burslem."
Measures 12.5 inches in height, 7.5 inches wide.
Very attractive condition, early restoration expertly repaired on the base, some rubbing, craquelure, as expected. This presents just perfectly.
