A fascinating work written directly in response to General William Booth's "In Darkest England and the Way Out." The author, a Democratic Socialist, goes through the book section by section.
It should be noted that In Darkest England argues precisely what many progressives argue today, i.e. that environment effects development and that giving opportunity is not enough, but rather changing the environment, intentional advocacy, etc. To quote Booth, "It is to be questioned how often drink leads to misery; it is more often that misery leads to drink. This makes misery the problem to be remedied rather than drink."
Hyndman grants these ideas, but more largely argues that Booth is not ambitious enough, etc., This is the only published interaction with Booth's works and proposals I am aware of. No copies on the market at any price. A fasinating piece of ephemera.
Hyndman, H. M. General Booth's Book Refuted. London. Justice Printery. 1890. 16pp.
