A truly exceptional copy of an early, experimental puritan classic.

Richard Sibs [Sibbs, Sibbes] [b.1577] was one of the most influential early Puritans as an exegete, in his warm, experimental tone, and in his belief, contra the antinomians, that the work of Christ Did systemic damage to the reign of Satan and self and allowed for a significant doctrine of sanctification.

His works have been deeply influential. Thomas Hooker's metaphorical doctrine of marriage and Christ was drawn from Sibbes, George Herbert's poetry draws from his imagery, John Wesley reprinted edited versions of his works for the Methodists, and Spurgeon considered him a significant influence on his preaching. Even in to the 20th century, he was highly recommended by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones.

The present copy, in a superb binding, is from the library of 19th century lay-Bible scholar, author, and bibliophile, Willett Lawrence Adye. Some of his library today resides in the Folger Library in Washington D.C.'s fine binding collection. A wonderful example.

Sibbs, Richard. The Soules Conflict with it selfe, and Victory over it selfe by Faith. A Treatise of the inward disquietments of distressed spirits, with comfortable remedies to establish them. London. Printed by M. F. for R. Dawlman, at the Brazen Serpent in Pauls Church-yard. 1638. 572pp.

Original elaborate tooled calf which has been masterfully restored probably at some point in the 19th century at the corners and spine. It is at present crisply bound with slight chipping to hinges. All text, with the exception of an occasional ink mark and one stain, crisp and clean. Title has some handling and a stain as shown.
