Very scarce, privately printed memoir of William Soule Stickney of the Ute Commission. The Commission was formed to negotiate the manage the tribal chaos in the Ute communities caused by the Westward Expansion and the continual seizure of ancestral lands. Stickney was instrumental in convincing the Utes to cede [again] large tracts of their Colorado reservation.

The Ute Commission was comprised of Gen. Edward Hatch, N. C. McFarland of Kansas, and William Stickney of Washington, DC. In addition, William Soule Stickney served as the Secretary and disbursing officer of the commission. Nearly 100 pages of the memoir are engaging the Ute Commission specifically.

This example, rather rare in any state, is also a presentation from Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Stickney [the subject's parents] on front free endpaper. Also, includes a 16 page, disbound copy of a Report of the Ute Commission, dated January, 20, 1881. Lists all individual Ute Indians that signed to ratify the agreement in July or August, 1880.
