Moe Berg (1902-1972) played 15 seasons of professional baseball as a catcher, but he was much more than a baseball player. A polyglot who spoke at least seven languages and educated at Princeton University, as well as Columbia Law School, he was also a United States Spy during World War Two, serving with the Office of Strategic Service (OSS), and later its successor, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Stating it mildly, his career in baseball was uneventful--a third string catcher who could not hit (just a .243 career average with slightly more than 400 base hits) and was just average defensively. Nonetheless, he was chosen by Connie Mack as a member of the famous 1934 All Star Team which traveled to Japan, a group that included Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx, among others. Why Berg? For defense department espionage ; his extensive video footage of Japanese military installations during that trip is well documented.

After his retirement from baseball, he worked as a United States "operative" during World War II, almost exclusively in Europe, and specifically with the task of ascertaining whether the German government and its physicists were close to completion of the atom bomb. He met with every renowned German and Austrian scientist involved, his high intelligence allowing him to comprehend the science involved and converse at length with these professionals. This intelligence service was invaluable to the U.S. government and later resulted in the Medal of Freedom bestowed upon him, the highest award given to a civilian who has aided our military in time of war.

Presented is a truly unique and captivating piece of memorabilia. His autograph, noted for its rarity due to his elusive nature, adds significant value and intrigue. The large size and dark fountain pen ink make this particular example a standout artifact, offering collectors a tangible connection to one of history's most enigmatic figures.

We paired the signature with a great image capturing both his persona as a catcher and his covert role as a spy - enhancing the narrative and historical significance of the display. Encased in a handsome frame with ultraviolet plexiglass, this presentation ensures the preservation of the artifact while showcasing its beauty and importance.

This display is indeed a rare gem, not only for its subject but also for its exceptional condition. Moe Berg’s autograph, authenticated by PSA/DNA, provides a crucial layer of authenticity and further enhances its collectible value.

Given Berg's dual legacy as both an unsung baseball player and a wartime hero, memorabilia like this is incredibly scarce. Pieces of this caliber seldom appear in the marketplace, making it a highly recommended acquisition for serious collectors of historical sports or espionage artifacts. Its rarity, coupled with the pristine condition and professional display, ensures it will remain a centerpiece in any collection for years to come.
