An excellent example of a production-level "hand-colored" work from a series of similar by King of New York. Now quite scarce, these among the earliest American hand-finished woodcuts, in matching tones throughout the text, and quite nicely preserved.
Last offered at Sotheby's in 1989. Merwin-Clayton noted it as very rare even in 1910.
Anonymous. The Children's Companion, or Entertaining Instructor for the Youth of Both Sexes; Designed to Excite Attention, and Inculcate Virtue. Selected from the Works of Berquin, Genlis, Day, and others. New-York. Published by S. King. 1825. 125pp.
A very good copy, bound in quarter leather, very solid, with generally bright pages, light foxing, and a small tide mark at the base of the text block. Binding a bit cocked.
