Very nicely preserved first American edition of Johnson's work based on the "Romantic" impulses of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi [1746-1827]. Centered in the meaningfulness of all human expressions because of his pietist faith, he urged music be approached from a technical perspective, of course, but that those skills be harnessed to empower emotional, spiritual, and individual expression in ways that were more in keeping with worship and the possibility of spiritual communication.
Johnson, A. N. Practical Instructions in Harmony, Upon the Pestalozzian or Inductive System; Teaching Musical Composition, and the Art of Extemporizing Interludes and Voluntaries. Boston. Published by Oliver Ditson. 1854. 210pp.
Good +. Some wear, a bit chipped and rubbed. Else solid, bright, and clean. Interesting associated period MSs included in the book as shown.
