At just 17 years old, the legendary publication dubbed LeBron “The Chosen One” as the most highly touted prospect in the history of the NBA. He perfectly scripted his name and number “23” in bold black ink on this iconic issue – the most well known cover SI ever issued.
During his 2002 HS Junior season, when this magazine was issued and signed, LeBron averaged an astounding 28pts, 9rebs, and 6ast, and he became the first HS Junior in the country to ever be named Male basketball Gatorade Player of the Year. His St. Vincent-St. Mary Catholic High School games were regularly aired on ESPN, and the team had to play in larger college gyms to accommodate all the fans coming to see "The Kid from Akron".
Early, high school versions of LeBron’s autograph like this are extremely rare! Despite the lofty expectations – being compared to Jordan, Magic, Bird, and Kobe - no one could have imagined that he would actually live up to the hype when this magazine was signed.
