A very attractive first edition of Amy Wilson-Carmichael's classic biography of Thomas Walker. Rather scarce in good condition in its own right. Then, the present copy with tipped in gift inscription from Mrs. Walker, long-time friend of Amy's.

Thomas Walker [1859-1912] was a missionary to South India and mentor to Amy Wilson-Carmichael and the one who encouraged her in the work of rescuing “temple girls.” She actually lived with the Walkers beginning in 1896 and it was the fiery Walker that taught her Tamil.

“Walker of Tinnevelly” as he came to be known through Wilson-Carmichael’s biography, was born at Matlock Bath, Derbyshire. He had been a brilliant preacher with a fiery bent I England before heading to Indian under the auspices of the Church Missionary Society.

And he continued his earnestness there. In short time, he had mastered the Tamil language, preaching in remote villages in the language of the people and translating hymns for the new converts.  By many accounts, the region he served, experienced a genuine revival under his ministry, especially during 1905 and 1906, concurrently with the latter days of the Welsh Revival.

The work itself has extensive content from the revivals, regarding the work at Dohnavur, etc.

Wilson-Carmichael, Amy. Walker of Tinnevelly. London. Morgan & Scott. 1916. First Edition. 458pp.

Very attractive and clean cloth with minor bumps at corners and spine just slightly sunned. Period inscription of original recipient and family on front flyleaf, just a bit tender at prelims. Some light pencil marks from original recipient or a family member who notes having finished the book in 1927. Quite minor though. A few pages apparently dog-eared at some point. Minor foxing. A really nice example with unusual provenance.
