Purchased from the Overstrand Mansion estate of G. K. Chesterton when he passed away in 1936 and through the family by descent, this is a wonderful little piece of G. K. Chesterton ephemera.
Famous for his cigar smoking, this all wood construction drum-style cigar box would have dated to early in his career, perhaps 1910 or so. It measures approximately 5 inches in height and 6 inches across with a simple pressure-fit lid. It would have originally contains 100 "Blackfriars Cheroots." Cheroots were a favorite of Chesterton; untapered or very mildly so at both ends and a rather more rustic affair, they fit his personality.
The box itself has a split at the top edge of the lid, not threatening the integrity of the box. Box itself in a very fine state, including original divider and liner. Small pencil notes on base, as though it were used for a quick note at some point; perhaps an address.
A cigar box having belonged to Winston Churchill sold for $100,000.00 at auction.
Perfect shelf display, open as a pen holder, or, well, I guess smoke 'em if you got 'em.
