Very rare and desirable autograph letter by prominent Evangelical divine, John Angell James [1785-1859]. He pastored what would become a prominent church, Carrs Lane Chapel in Birmingham. He authored The Anxious Inquirer, which sold over 500,000 copies, a book given by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones to his wife when she was seeking Christ, and which was very helpful to C. H. Spurgeon.
He also authored An Earnest Ministry. The Want of the Times, and many other works still in print today, including by Banner of Truth Trust, Soli Deo Gloria, etc.
For some reason. James' autograph seems exceptionally rare. We handle it very rarely.
Letter in a very good state, though a bit unevenly toned as shown. A difficult hand, nearly illegible.

My Dear Sir,
I am taking a liberty which I believe is not too great to be **********. I am away from home for rest and am spending a week with my friend Mr. Wells. . . I went to spend the Sabbath in Bath to hear Mr. Jay and Mr. Vaughan and our old friend once more. I wrote to Dr. Bell to give me a bed, but, have not heard from him, by which I conclude he is not at home.
How could I obtain this favour either at your house or your brethren. I **** his address. &c.
. . .
Yours vy trly,
J. A. James"
