Butyrate

Butyrate is made in the colon by bacteria and taken up by the cells that line the colon, the colonocytes. Combined with calcium and magnesium, it is a short chain fatty acid, vital for colonocytes. When we lack beneficial bacteria in our colon, when we take antibiotics for example, we may end up with a reduced supply of butyrate.  

Butyric acid has long been recognised for its capability to assist probiotic strains to adhere to the intestinal lining, butyric acid also helps to improve the natural healing mechanism of gut tissue. It is thought that it may play a key anti-inflammatory role and provides a prime energy source for cells of the colon.

Those patients who have inflammatory bowel disorders tend to have low levels of butyrate as well as those who consume diets low in carbohydrates.  Research is now investigation butyric acid's immunological effects with chemopreventive properties revealed in some studies. It has also been found to play a role in the desensitisation of the gastrointestinal tract.

Dose of Calcium Magnesium Butyrate

Approximately 1-2 caps with each meal, unless otherwise suggested by a healthcare practitioner.
