A very attractive set of the complete commentaries of Thomas Scott [1747-1821], long-time friend of John Newton, under whose sway he became an evangelical. He was one of the founders of the Church Missionary Society, influenced William Wilberforce and William Carey, was a noted abolitionist, etc., 

It is perhaps not accidental that his commentary was published in the heat of the Civil War, just after the Emancipation Proclamation, and that it was known as supporting anti-slavery, radical abolitionist positions in its translation choices and textual comment.

A very good copy, bound in leather, very solid with some rubbing at extremities. Pages are bright and clean with some light foxing.  A very nice set.
