1851 R. DOUGLASS. Presbyterian Writes against Baptist & Church of Christ Re-Baptizers in New England.A fascinating little work, apparently self published, with no copies on the market at the time of cataloguing. The author clearly has the Baptists and Stone Campbell evangelists in mind. He mentions those coming in causing division, and re baptizing people as though they had not been Christians, then making great hay out of their "new converts," who were no knew converts at all, etc., Addressed to both the young and to parents. A fascinating little work, apparently self-published, with no copies on the market at the time of cataloguing. The author clearly has the Baptists and Stone-Campbell evangelists in mind. He mentions those coming in causing division, and re-baptizing people as though they had not been Christians, then making great hay out of their "new converts," who were no knew converts at all, etc., Addressed to both the young and to parents.

The present copy owned by an early Disciples of Christ preacher and evangelist, J. A.[James Alexander] Cowgill [1818-1882]. He was preaching in Walnut Springs in 1854, pastored the Christian Church at Strasburg, VA from 1856-1865, though they apparently were forbidden from meeting during the War. He also seems to have served as an evangelist at the same time. George. A. Abell says he was one of ones who was a "noble exception" to the many evangelists who had "waxed cool" and was wholly given to the work. We also find him listed as an evangelist in Snowville, Virginia during the latter half of the 1860's. He later pastored in West Virginia as well.

And the volume was given to him by Abram Stickley of the Disciples Church at Walnut Springs.

Douglass, R. Infant Baptism; Including a Series of Conversations on the Subject and Mode of Baptism, Designed, Chiefly, for the Beneifit of the Young. Philadelphia. King & Baird, Printers. No. 9, Sansom Street. 1851. 159pp.

Good + with some wear and bumping as shown. Very solid. Small stain at head of front board extending onto the block and diminishing throughout; apparently sepia ink. Interesting early ownership label of Charles C. Cowgill and inscription from A. Strickler to J. A. Cowgill, 1869. Fly leaf has small hole rubbed. Else very solid and clean, some scattered foxing.
