Bounded to the north by the Arthur River and to the south by the Pieman River, the Tarkine Wilderness on the west coast of Tasmania is the largest undisturbed track of rare cool temperate rainforest in Australia and the second largest in the world. Regularly watered by the storms of the Roaring 40's, the forest is home to some of the oldest, tallest and slowest growing trees in Australia. Mosses, lichen and epiphytes encrust almost everything and little light reaches the forest floor. Any place where the tree canopy allows the sun to penetrate to the forest floor, however briefly, provides opportunity for smaller plants, a Tree Fern here "Chasing Light Amongst Giants".
