Every rider who's crouched at the trailer with a screwdriver in one hand and a bit in the other knows the frustration of traditional Chicago screw headstalls. The Professional's Choice Quick-Change One-Ear Headstall with Tassels & Diamond Tooling solves that problem with a tool-free tassel system that lets you swap bits by hand in seconds — no hardware to lose in arena dirt, no wrestling with stripped threads before your ride.
Built from premium roughout leather with authentic rawhide braiding and diamond tooling, this headstall delivers the clean, professional look you want in the show pen with the durability you need for daily ranch work. The single-ear design provides a secure, minimalist fit that showcases your horse's head while the heavy-weight leather offers the ideal feel for subtle communication with finished horses working in curb bits.
Western performance riders and working ranch hands looking for a durable, professional-looking headstall that eliminates hardware hassles during bit changes on finished horses working in curb bits.
Yes, this Professional's Choice headstall is designed as a standard one-size-fits-most, fitting horses between 800 and 1,200 pounds. The adjustment range runs approximately 38 to 45 inches bit-to-bit, which accommodates most Quarter Horses, Paints, and similar breeds comfortably.
Single-ear headstalls are specifically designed for use with curb or shanked bits on finished horses. Because they lack a throatlatch, they're not recommended for snaffle bits where direct-rein pressure during training could cause the headstall to pull off the horse's head. Stick with a browband or slip-ear headstall for snaffle work.
The tassel system uses a sliding loop or knot that secures the bit firmly during your ride — it won't slip or come loose under normal use. When you're ready to change bits, you simply slide or untie the tassel by hand without needing any tools. It's the same security as a Chicago screw, just faster and easier to work with.
Roughout leather has the flesh side facing outward, giving it a suede-like texture that provides excellent grip and a traditional western look. It's naturally less slippery than smooth leather, tends to show less wear over time, and develops a beautiful patina with use. Many working riders prefer roughout for its durability and authentic ranch aesthetic.
