Fascinating read on the life of the pious "boy preacher" of Liverpool. Converted at an early age and of a singular reputation for piety and spiritual seriousness, he was, against all norms, allowed to begin preaching at 16 years old. By 17 years of age, he was preaching round the country, including in prominent London churches. He even preached at Rowland Hill's Surrey Chapel . . . many a seasoned preacher would have given their pinky finger to preach in that grand and storied church. 

Just as he was set to become perhaps a pre-Spurgeon Spurgeon, at 20 years of age, he drowned while swimming. 

His memoir was immediately influential, being read by young ministerial candidates all around, demonstrating that a young man who prays, has internal piety, studies, and works hard will always find a ready group of hearers for Christ.
